Neuroscience Major
Students must also complete the Undergraduate Registration Requirement and the degree requirements of their home school.
Double-counting note: Weinberg College prohibits double-counting a major course toward some other major or minor, except where this is explicitly permitted in this catalog (see below for special rules about neuroscience major Allied Field courses, Related courses, and Laboratory Experience courses). Weinberg College does allow double-counting a major course toward a general bachelor's degree requirement (i.e. degree requirements other than majors or minors). Other programs or schools may have their own restrictions that supersede this, so check the relevant parts of this catalog for possible limits.
Neuroscience major requirements
- 7 Neuroscience units (courses may not be double-counted inside the neuroscience major with Allied Field courses or required Related Courses for the neuroscience major)
- 2 200-level NEUROSCI core courses
- 1 Group A Elective course (has a primary focus on human behavior and the human brain)
- 4 Group B Elective courses (have a primary focus on molecular, cellular, and systems-level mechanisms of brain function)
- 3 Allied Field units, at least 2 of which must be 300-level or above, chosen from one of the following areas. Courses may not be double-counted with the core courses, Neuroscience elective units, or required Related Courses for the neuroscience major. Double-counting note: A maximum of 2 Allied Field courses may be double-counted with another major, and none with a minor.

Students who completed Topics in Neuroscience (NEUROSCI 390-0) may not complete another NEUROSCI 300-level course with the same title. Ex: Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis (NEUROSCI 371-0) was taught under NEUROSCI 390-0 section 29 prior to academic year 2025-26, but may only be taken once for credit.
An exception to the rule above is Topics in Neuroscience (NEUROSCI 390-0) section 32 which has a different title. Ex: Big Data in Contemporary Neurobiology (NEUROSCI 368-0) was taught under NEUROSCI 390-0 section 32 with the title, "Common Data Analysis in Contemporary Neurobiology" in academic year 2025-26, but now has the title, "Big Data in Contemporary Neurobiology". Honors in Neuroscience
Majors with strong academic records and significant research accomplishments may pursue honors in neuroscience. Interested students should contact the director of undergraduate studies by email no later than the beginning of fall quarter senior year. Considerations for honors include GPA and the quality of a written thesis based on the student’s research. Students also must complete at least 1 quarter of Independent Study in Neuroscience (NEUROSCI 399-0) prior to winter term of senior year, and Senior Thesis Seminar (NEUROSCI 398-0) in winter of senior year.
