Degree Requirements

The following requirements are in addition to, or further elaborate upon, those requirements outlined in The Graduate School Policy Guide.

Students must successfully complete at least nine quality letter-graded course units (ABC, not P/NP or S/U) authorized for graduate credit in addition to completing the minimum number of units of credit needed for a bachelor’s degree (42 or more units, depending on the degree and school). TGS allows a maximum of three units to count towards both the undergraduate and graduate degrees. Individual programs may have more strict requirements. Students must speak with both their undergraduate and graduate advisers to ensure that both sets of requirements are met without exceeding the limits of double counting, if permitted.

BS/MS

Recommended Undergraduate Coursework 

Undergraduates intending to apply to the BS/MS program are strongly encouraged to complete these courses in the undergraduate curriculum:

• MECH_ENG 222-0 Thermodynamics & Statistical Mechanics - I

Students may take the first course listed in each group below to obtain the breadth needed for an MS in Mechanical Engineering in any area, or take courses recommended in one group to obtain the depth needed to be more specialized.

MS Requirements

Total Units Required for the Master's Degree: 12

• The degree requirements are the same as those outlined for the Mechanical Engineering MS.
• All courses presented for the MS must be graduate level (TGS academic career). 
• Courses used to fulfill bachelor's degree requirements may not be used to fulfill requirements for the master's degree.
