Learning Objectives

• Explore plays and playwrights from across the globe writing then and now.
• Learn to navigate the unique and challenging world of new play development.
• Produce a portfolio of work which includes (but is not limited to) one full length plays, one short play, and a script from a different medium (adaptation, television, film, webisode, etc).
• Become a supportive member of the new play community on campus.
• Explore the new play development business, including (but not limited to): theatres across the country, their literary staffs and their new work programs, agent solicitation, contract negotiation, resume/vitae construction, festivals and retreats, graduate schools, and fellowship opportunities.

Module Requirements (6 units)

Students must achieve a GPA of B- (2.7) or higher in courses counted toward the module to be eligible to submit a Capstone. Courses to be counted toward fulfilling module requirements may not be taken P/N with the exception of CMN capstone courses.

Track One

• The Advanced Playwriting Sequence AND 2 elective courses from the list below.

Track Two

• 2 Genre Playwriting Courses AND 3 elective courses from the list below.

The playwriting module electives change every year according to the classes offered in each department. Generally, electives are courses that generate new work across artistic mediums and incorporate knowledge or skills utilized in new play development. Electives that satisfy this requirement include:

This zero-credit course encompasses all co-curricular activities and the capstone project required for completion of the module.
